Shut-off valve replacement in Ottawa
Most people only think about their shut-off valve when something is leaking and they need it to work right now. If yours is old, stiff or dripping, replacing it before an emergency is one of the most practical plumbing jobs you can do.
The valves in your home
- Main shut-off. Usually in the basement, near where the water pipe comes through the floor and the water meter. It turns off water to the whole house.
- Fixture shut-offs. The small valves under sinks and behind toilets.
- Appliance valves. For the washing machine, fridge water line, dishwasher and water heater.
- Outdoor tap shut-offs. Inside valves that feed hose bibs (see our winterizing guide).
Signs a valve needs replacing
- It won't turn, or you're afraid to force it
- It turns but doesn't fully stop the water
- It drips from the stem when opened or closed
- Green or white crust around the valve body
- It's an old multi-turn (gate or globe) valve. Many older Ottawa homes still have these as the main shut-off. They tend to seize over time.
Modern quarter-turn ball valves are easier to close quickly and are less prone to seizing.
A word of caution
If a very old valve hasn't been turned in years, forcing it can snap the stem or start a leak you can't stop. If the main valve is the problem, the water may need to be shut off at the City's curb stop (the shut-off outside, at the property line) before it can be replaced. That valve belongs to the City, so don't try to operate it yourself. The City's Lead Pipe Replacement Program pages explain where the private and public portions of the water service meet (ottawa.ca, Lead Pipe Replacement Program).

Worth checking while you're there
If you're replacing the main shut-off in an older home, it's a good moment to:
- Check what the incoming pipe is made of. If it's dull grey and soft, it may be lead (see our lead pipe guide).
- Replace fixture valves at the same time. Doing several valves in one visit is usually more efficient.
- Label your main shut-off so everyone in the house can find it.
Rental and condo units
For property managers, seized shut-offs are a common reason a small leak turns into a ceiling repair downstairs. Replacing old valves during a unit turnover is a simple preventive step.
